Each CivX project begins with a close working relationship with our partner organization or community. After a open application process, we make a commitment to our partner. A typical project will provide the partner organization with the equivalent of a full-time employee, who is dedicated to the identified problem, for 3 months. Our partners routinely cite this total time commitment as something they wouldn't otherwise have the resources for.
After we've identified a partner and confirmed a design brief (i.e. problem we'll focus on), we open the student application. First and foremost, we're looking for students who can contribute a rigorous research skill-set. But additionally we want students who can still play. Who can still play with ideas, want to learn, explore new perspectives and value the power of multiple methods and other research disciplines. Once we have a collaborative team we begin our additional training seminars and get to work.
